UNITED "TRU-BLUE" COMPUTERIZED ROCKWELL HARDNESS TESTER

The United Tru-Blue Rockwell Hardness Tester is a completely computerized
system designed to
perform Rockwell hardness testing on various metallic materials in accord
ance with ASTM E 18.
Also on various plastics and electrical insulation materials (ASTMD-785),
and other materials
including carbides.
The tester does not utilize any internal weights, levers, springs or oper
ator dials in its operation.
Instead, the entire test cycle, from scale selection and minor and major
load application, to
calculation of the Rockwell hardness number is micro-processor controlled
. Both minor and
major loads are accurately applied by a sophisticated strain member. The
depth of penetration is
measured by a proprietary depth measurement device mounted directly above
the penetrator. The
scale selection, test and statistics read buttons, and the dot-matrix rea
dout are located on the front
panel of the tester head.
Testing can be conducted in any one of the 15 regular or 15 superficial s
cale in sequence A, B, C
etc. for all 15 regular scales; 15N, 30N, 45N, 15T, etc. for all 15 supe
rficial scales. For each
scale selected, the readout will display the proper penetrator to be used
.
The Tru-Blue Hardness Tester may be utilized in either a "standard" or "p
roduction" test mode.
In the "standard" test mode, for each test the operator raises the elevat
ing screw until the test
piece contacts the penetrator. Contact with the penetrator will initiate
the test cycle with both the
minor and major load being applied automatically alerts the operator in t
he event of an overload
situation.
The "Production" test mode allows numerous similar size parts to be teste
d without the need to
manually raise and lower the elevating screw for each test. The elevatin
g screw is raised until the
surface of the first test piece is within 1/32" to 1/6" of the penetrator
. The test button is then
pressed to begin the test cycle. The penetrator will move down to contac
t the test piece, perform
the test, then automatically retract. Succeeding tests require only plac
ing each same size test piece
on the anvil and pressing the Test button.
Statistical data is automatically accumulated for subsequent analysis. W
hen the Statistics read
button is pressed the readout will display the number of tests conducted,
along with the highest
and lowest hardness reading obtained. When the Read button is pressed a
second time the
readout will display the number of tests conducted, the average hardness
, and standard deviation.
Cont'd on
After displaying the statistical data for a given number of tests, additi
onal tests can be conducted
and additional data accumulated (up to 9,999 tests in any one sequence),
or the statistics can be
completely cleared in preparation for the next series of tests. Data fro
m an obviously bad or
invalid test can be immediately cleared so as not to distort the results
of the remaining tests in
the series.
A special nose clamp, provided with every United hardness tester, is desi
gned to support large or
heavy overhanging test pieces. The nose clamp can be utilized when testi
ng in either the
"Standard" or "Production" test mode.
The tester is

an RS-232 serial data port which provides add
itional operational
capabilities including optional printer and/or host computer interface, o
ptional foot switch
operation, or to accommodate utilization of the United "Smart" Tru-Blue S
PC software package.
