NOTE The Model KGH-300 Gear Honing Machine represents a major advance in t
he art of honing
hard spur and helical gears. To date, gear honing has closely resembled gea
r shaving where the
typical hone is a helical gear meshing with the workpiece at crossed axes.
The KGH-300 uses a
worm-type hone, which meshes with the gear in the same manner as hobbing, an
d has an action that
is similar to the Reishauer method of grinding gear teeth. Worm honing with
the KGH-300 has
several advantages, including (1) speed of 2000 FPM versus 600 FPM; (2) 0.6
um surface finish
versus 4.6 um; (3) shorter honing time; (4) resharpening of hones by the use
r; (5) longer hone life;
and (6) more accurate hones.
