2012 OKUMA 2SP-V40 Twin Spindle CNC Vertical Lathe with 15" Chucks, 12 position turrets, 2500 rpm, 30 HP, Coolant and chip conveyor
The Okuma 2SP-V40 is a twin-spindle inverted vertical CNC lathe that brings simultaneous OP10/OP20 turning capability to medium-diameter disc parts up to 400 mm (15.7 in). It shares the proven twin-spindle architecture of the 2SP-V760EX but scales up the turning envelope for larger automotive and industrial components including brake rotors, flywheels, and gear blanks that exceed the 2SP-V760EX's 300 mm limit.
Each inverted spindle delivers 22/18.5 kW (30/25 hp) at up to 2,500 RPM with 350 Nm (258 ft-lb) of torque. The twin-spindle layout means spindle one picks up a raw blank and machines OP10 while spindle two simultaneously machines OP20 on the previous part. This parallel processing effectively doubles throughput compared to a single-spindle vertical lathe. Maximum turning height is 250 mm (9.8 in) per station.
Each station features a 12-station turret with optional driven tools for cross-drilling and tapping. X-axis travel is 260 mm (10.2 in) and Z-axis travel is 350 mm (13.8 in) per station, with rapid traverse at 30 m/min on both axes. The integrated gantry loader transfers parts between stations and handles loading/unloading from conveyors, creating a fully automated cell within a single machine footprint.
Okuma's Thermo-Friendly Concept compensates for thermal growth across both spindles simultaneously, maintaining part-to-part consistency through long production runs without operator intervention. The OSP-P200LA control manages both spindles, both turrets, and the gantry loader from a unified interface with Collision Avoidance System protecting the complex twin-spindle configuration.
Pricing runs $500,000-$700,000 new. Machine weight is approximately 14,000 kg (30,864 lb). The machine targets Tier 1 automotive suppliers and heavy equipment manufacturers running 150,000+ parts per year where the twin-spindle throughput advantage justifies the capital investment.

Twin-spindle architecture machines OP10 and OP20 simultaneously, doubling throughput versus single-spindle vertical lathes for disc parts
400 mm turning diameter handles larger components like full-size brake rotors and flywheels that exceed the 2SP-V760EX capacity
Thermo-Friendly Concept compensates for thermal growth across both spindles simultaneously for consistent part quality
Inverted spindle design with gravity-assisted chip evacuation keeps both cutting zones clean throughout production runs
